My Neighbourhood | Natasha Ngan on St Albans

Blogger Natasha Ngan of girlinthelens.com gives us the lowdown on her favourite places to visit in Hertfordshire…

HOME IS…
St Albans. I’ve lived here all my life, as well as jetting back and forth to Malaysia, where my mother’s family is from. No matter where I go, I always feel most at home in St Albans, taking sunset walks around Verulamium Park, mooching from coffee shop to coffee shop, taking blog photos around the pretty Conservation Area streets. I currently live right in the centre of town, which is super convenient.

WORK IS…
Blogging, writing novels and teaching yoga. It’s my happy little trio! I’ve run the fashion and lifestyle blog Girl in the Lens for over four years, and it’s grown from just a little creative project to a full-time job. I’m also an author, with two young adult sci-fi and fantasy novels published. I also teach yoga in St Albans too, which I’m enjoying so much!

FAVOURITE PLACE TO SPEND A RELAXING SUNDAY…
Heartwood Forest in Sandridge. I love walking there from my parents’ house in Marshalswick. In spring, when the bluebells are out, the woods look so magical. Then I’d make a quick stop in one of Sandridge’s pubs – I love the Rose & Crown and The Queen’s Head – for a drink, before heading to The Rex in Berkhamsted or The Odyssey in St Albans to watch a film.

MOST MEMORABLE MEAL YOU’VE HAD LOCALLY…
Sunday roast at The Cock on St Peter’s Street in St Albans; their roast beef is absolutely delicious. I never cook a roast at home as it’s just two of us living in the flat, so I love going out for one.

FAVOURITE PLACE FOR A NIGHT OUT WITH FRIENDS…
I usually go out in London, but more locally I love film nights every Sunday at The Pudding Stop on Verulam Road in St Albans. Movie + sweet treats + wine? Yes, please!

FAVOURITE SPOT FOR SOME RETAIL THERAPY…
For clothes, The Maltings in St Albans has a good selection of high-street stores. I also like to browse the independent shops along Fishpool Street, although I actually do most of my shopping online nowadays. I’m more of a coffee shop kind of girl when I’m in town.

BUILDING YOU’D MOST LIKE TO LIVE IN…
One of the pretty little cottages in St Albans’ Conservation Area or, if it was going, St Michael’s Manor. Imagine summer afternoons lazing by the lake.

BEST PLACE FOR A NIGHTCAP…
Craft & Cleaver on Catherine Street in St Albans is a new favourite. Their cocktails are amazing!

FAVOURITE LOCAL DISCOVERY…
Hiding in the long grass in summer at Jersey Farm, watching the clouds go by.

FAVOURITE PLACE TO SOAK UP SOME CULTURE…
There are so many beautiful little villages and towns around Hertfordshire- perfect if you’re a fan of architecture and history. I love visiting Shaws Corner (Bernard Shaw’s former home) in Ayot St Lawrence, which holds outdoor plays in summer and can be reached on foot along a picturesque route from Wheathampstead. Ideal for a sunny day out.

BEST SPOT FOR A FAMILY DAY OUT…
A walk on Dunstable Downs and a trip to Whipsnade Zoo just around the corner. I’m always recommending Whipsnade to London friends. It’s a park and zoo in one, and it’s hard to beat those beautiful views over the Downs.
