Wedding Planner | The Dress

Sassi Holford has been creating designer wedding dresses and occasion wear for 35 years. All of her gowns are handmade in Devon by her expert team of cutters and seamstresses, and they have been worn by the likes of Darcey Bussell, Helen Mirren and by Autumn Kelly for her wedding to Peter Phillips. Here, Sassi shares her expert advice for finding your perfect wedding dress.

What should a bride consider before she starts choosing her wedding dress?

Firstly, we recommend brides do their homework. Determine what styles, shapes and fabrics you like and if they suit your personality and style. By doing this, it doesn’t mean that’s what you’ll end up wearing, but it’s a starting point. There is so much choice for brides today it can become very overwhelming.

When should a bride start looking for her wedding dress?

We would say start looking at styles, designers and inspiration about a year in advance. Ideally, you would need to order your wedding gown six to nine months before the big day. The longer you give yourself the better. It gives you time to thoroughly enjoy the experience.

How can brides ensure they stay true to their personal style?

Make sure that your hair and make-up style matches your personality, and that it isn’t something you wouldn’t normally do. You want to look like the best version of yourself, not someone completely different! Also, don’t be swayed too much by the latest fashions; individual style is timeless.

Tarrin Dress by Sassi Holford, 2018 Collection

With such a huge range of wedding dress styles to choose from, how will a bride know when she has found ‘the one’?

Brides say they ‘ just know’ when they’ve found their dress. We recommend trying on a variety of styles and shapes, even some you wouldn’t necessarily think to try. That way, you can explore all the possibilities rather than just going with your initial thoughts.

Do you recommend the bride takes friends and family with her when trying on dresses?

We do recommend having people who you trust with you when trying on gowns. However, the more people you bring, the more there are to please, and too many opinions can be overwhelming.

How should a bride prepare for wedding-dress fittings?

We ask our brides to bring their bridal shoes with them and to wear their wedding underwear. We make sure they are calm as the fittings can be a daunting experience.

Do you have any personal favourite gowns from your bridal collections?

My personal favourite from the 2018 Collection is Cordelia (pictured below). It’s such a classic wedding dress and one that still takes my breath away.
